The average Hollywood tourist might be surprised at all the companies running Hollywood tours who are soliciting on Hollywood Boulevard. The tour business is booming and with that influx of new potential consumers, the streets of Hollywood have turned into intense hunting grounds to sell tour packages to anyone walking down the streets. According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, the fierce competition is so over the top that competitors have street corners that they defend.
Previously, I have mentioned just how insane some of these tour sales folks act. It’s pretty obvious they are verbally slamming each other and I’ve even seen altercations between different vendors. The actions can be seen by any visitor as it is out in the open, but that doesn’t stop it from happening. Shoving, screaming and even spitting are commonplace occurrences from the sales people.
Most of the tour people live off the commissions of the tickets packages they sell. It’s their lunch month on the line and they don’t mind doing as needed to make the coins. Tourists who come to town don’t necessarily have a bus tour planned and will go on a ride if properly convinced. Leaving the sales people fighting not only for a corner, but also for the chance to fill a bus.
The mentality of the Hollywood tour bus sales crew (no matter the company) is worse than used car salesmen. It’s only going to be a matter of time before the tour bus sales people end up taking their competition a step too far. Unless someone can point out to these folks that it is possible to all get along.
